Short version: ClipRing stores your clipboard text on your device only. Nothing is ever sent to a server. No accounts, no tracking, no analytics.
Overview
ClipRing is a clipboard history manager for iOS and macOS. Your privacy is fundamental to how we built it. ClipRing is designed to work entirely on your device. If you enable the optional iCloud sync feature, your data moves only between your own devices through your personal iCloud account — never through our servers.
What ClipRing Collects
Clipboard content (text you copy)
ClipRing saves plain text and URLs that you copy or share into the app. This data is stored locally on your device inside a secure App Group container shared between the main app, the keyboard extension, and the Share extension. It is never transmitted to Microdog Labs or any third party.
On iOS, the optional Auto-save on open feature (Settings → Capture, on by default, can be turned off) reads the clipboard only while ClipRing is on screen, subject to iOS’s paste-permission controls — never in the background. On macOS, clipboard monitoring is the app’s core function and runs while the app is open, as described in the app.
What ClipRing deliberately does NOT capture
Content that password managers (1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Passwords, and others) mark as concealed or transient on the pasteboard — such as copied passwords and one-time codes — is automatically excluded and never recorded.
Nothing else. ClipRing collects no analytics, no crash reports, no device identifiers, no usage data, and no personal information of any kind.
How Your Data Is Used
Your clipboard history is used solely to provide the app’s core feature: letting you access, paste, and manage items you have previously copied. It is never used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond what you explicitly ask the app to do.
Data Storage
All data is stored locally on your device using Apple’s UserDefaults App Group mechanism. Clipboard items remain on your device until you delete them manually, they expire per your configured expiration setting, or you uninstall the app. Unless you enable iCloud sync (below), no data leaves your device or is shared with any other app or service outside the ClipRing App Group.
iCloud Sync (optional, ClipRing Pro)
If you turn on Sync across devices, your clipboard items are stored in the private CloudKit database of your own iCloud account so your other devices signed into the same account can read them. This data is:
- Encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple’s CloudKit infrastructure
- Accessible only to your iCloud account — Microdog Labs has no access to it and cannot read, decrypt, or export it
- Deleted from iCloud according to your in-app deletion, expiration, and ring-size settings
Sync is off by default. Turning it off stops all syncing immediately; previously synced items remain in your iCloud account until deleted by your devices.
Keyboard Extension and Full Access
The ClipRing keyboard extension requests “Allow Full Access.” This permission is required solely so the keyboard can read your saved clipboard history from the shared on-device App Group container — the same container used by the main app and Share extension. Without Full Access, iOS does not permit a keyboard extension to access App Group data.
ClipRing’s keyboard extension does not use Full Access to:
- Record your keystrokes
- Transmit data over the network
- Access your contacts, photos, or any other data
- Track your usage or behavior
Input Monitoring Permission (macOS)
On macOS, ClipRing requests Input Monitoring permission to detect its clipboard shortcuts — ⇧Cmd-V / ⇧Cmd-Z for cycling through history, and Cmd-C in terminal apps — and to simulate keyboard events for pasting. It observes key presses only to recognize these specific shortcuts; it never records, stores, or transmits your keystrokes, and it ignores all other input. The permission is granted through System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring and can be revoked at any time. No data is transmitted as part of this feature.
Purchases (ClipRing Pro)
ClipRing Pro is a one-time in-app purchase processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. Microdog Labs never receives your name, payment details, or billing information. The app checks your purchase status (including the automatic Pro upgrade for ClipRing 1.x purchasers) on-device using Apple’s StoreKit framework — no account is created and nothing is sent to us. Free and Pro users are treated identically in every other respect described in this policy.
Third Parties
ClipRing uses no third-party SDKs, analytics services, advertising networks, or crash-reporting tools. No data is shared with any third party for any reason.
Children
ClipRing is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to This Policy
If we materially change this policy, we will update the effective date above and notify users via an app update release note.
